In 2002, fulfilling one of his childhood dreams, he joined the United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, trying to make a difference in the lives of children in the most difficult situations. In July 2004, he joined the Sustanaible Development Division of the Department of Economical and Social Affairs.
Previously, Massimo worked with the European Commission in Brussels where he was involved with the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, an experience that took him to the field, supervising projects in Mongolia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia - as deep as Siberia.
He has built his professional career in the European NGO sector, with the European Human Rights Foundation, the European Forum for Child Welfare, and as the European Liaison Officer of the Italian children protection line "Telefono Azzurro" and he made his contribution to the creation of the EC Dafne Programme to fight violence against children and coordinated projects related to sexual exploitation and trafficking in children. During those years he also published two books on children`s rights and lobbied for the creation of a European Ombudsperson for children. He has also published several articles on human rights.
He always presents himself as a European citizen with Italian Nationality. Massimo shaped his "being European" ideas at the Universita` di Bologna, at Sussex University (Erasmus), and at the European University Institute in Florence. He is a member of the Aspen Junior Fellows, Aspen Institute Italia and he is the president of the Circolo Culturale Italiano of the United Nations.
He loves immensely his activity as visiting professor on human rights and international organizations with various universities both in the USA and in Europe.
He has a passion for writing tales and poems. His dreams are to write a book about different cultures, create a family with many children, to fly on some spacecraft in order to see the entire globe at once and, most of all, to make his contribution to build a better world.
